Meet the Bramalodge Family.
Bramalodge Dachshunds was originally the dream of my parents Julia and Graham. We are an animal, countryside and outdoors loving family, being lucky enough to live in the foothills of the glorious Derbyshire Peak District. Dad is still a walker and has been involved in country pursuits his life. Mum worked with horses until her retirement and showed our dogs while she was well enough.
We have always had horses and dogs of various breeds, until my uncle had a Wire Haired Dachsund that my Dad fell in love with! In 2013 Mum found Deri, our foundation bitch, and shortly after imported her half-sister Daisy, with no intention of breeding, sticking instead to working and subsequently showing them. After much outside admiration and enquiry from friends, they realised they did want to have litters from their gorgeous girls and so Bramalodge was founded.
Thankfully in a position to take over the management of my parent’s dogs in 2019 when my Mum became unwell, I have been here ever since. Expanding my love and knowledge of the breed and taking on the kennel name.
Amazingly! (all things considered) both my parents are still kicking on at 75 years old, supporting me all the way, and I have the luxury of input from both of them.
My new husband Matthew is now also very much involved with the dogs… His huge heart and support are very much appreciated and his patience quite remarkable!
A well-bred pack of winners!
We are lucky enough to have dogs that are not only wonderful pets, and working dogs, but have also done us proud in the show ring, winning or being placed almost every time out, and even qualifying and competing at CRUFTS! We are delighted to be showing on the famous green carpets again this year… Please do come and find us if you’re there, meet us and our dogs and above all….Wish us luck!
Our hopes for the future are to continue to keep our dogs as pets, train them, walk them, show them successfully and to breed healthy and quality puppies. We primarily breed for ourselves to improve our lines and hopefully to improve the breed. Alongside this we are happily also able to provide suitable, loving families with well socialised, home reared, healthy and confident pets.
When breeding we try very hard to keep close to the Breed Standard, aiming to have dogs of good size, weight and proportions – but with health, functionality, strength and capability being paramount.
Homebred and Home Boarded
All our dogs and puppies are born and raised in the house and integrated into our daily life, becoming naturally comfortable with the hustle and bustle of a home environment from day one. Noises such as TVs, vacuum cleaners, washers and dryers, children playing, cleaning and chatter are the norm. Puppies are handled from birth and all are loved unconditionally.
We don’t use kennels here, and on the rare occasions our dogs are caged in it is for safety, cleaning, travel or out of necessity. They are rarely caged overnight or for long periods. That is, in our opinion, unacceptable. They are all familiar with crates and cages from a young age though, it’s just a voluntary affair! The use of crates and feeling happy and confident in them is very important. We just don’t think they should live in them.
The dogs always have access to outside space and the garden when we are at home. We use a dog flap. Puppies are encouraged outside from an early age to start supervised adventures and toilet training. It is unusual for the house to be left unattended for more than half an hour. So, dogs are not left alone often, and never without other canine company or unsecured. There is always someone at home 24/7 when we have puppies.
